Summary:
Joclyn Despain has been marred by a brand on her skin. She doesn't know why the mark appeared on her neck, but she doesn't want anyone to see it, including her best friend Ryland, who knows everything else about her. The scar is the reason she hides herself behind baggy clothes, and won't let the idea of kissing Ryland enter her mind, no matter how much she wants to.
The scar is the reason she is being hunted.

If only she knew that she was.

If only she had known that the cursed stone her estranged father sent for her 16th birthday would trigger a change in her. Now, she is being stalked by a tall blonde man, and is miraculously throwing her high school bully ten feet in the air.

Joclyn attempts to find some answers and the courage to follow her heart. When Ryland finds her scar; only he knows what it means, and who will kill her because of it.
MY REVIEW:
My good friend, Lacy, has been begging me to read this series so when it came up free on Amazon awhile back I jumped on it.  I'm glad I did too!

Joclyn has been raised alone by her mom since she was five years old when a very strange sickness came over her and left a rather strange mark on her neck.  Either due to the stress of the situation or something else her dad decided he couldn't handle it anymore and left. Being a single parent is incredibly hard but her mom finds a job as a cook in the home of Edmund LaRue who lives in a mansion with himself and his son, Ryland. Ryland is two years older than Joclyn but they became fast friends as children and have stayed close despite their apparent status differences.  Ryland goes to a private school for all boys and Joclyn is in public school. Ryland is extremely wealthy and has a bedroom that is probably as big as Joclyn's entire apartment.  Despite all of that, they share a special connection.

Fast forward 11 years and Ryland is a short time away from graduating high school with plans to travel to Europe for college leaving behind Joclyn.  She knows realistically that their friendship won't survive all that distance, not to mention the fact that for whatever reason his dad is extremely against the two of them being friends, to the point of threatening her mom's job if they continue to go behind his back to hang out.  But as with any great and true friendship deeper feelings start to form between them.  If only Joclyn weren't so self conscious about the strange mark on her neck left behind from the sickness, then she could open up more fully to Ryland.

One night allowing herself a moment to give in to her deeper feelings and letting her guard down will thrust her into a world she has known nothing about.  A world that might put herself and Ryland farther apart than they've ever been before.

The ending had me in tears feeling all the emotions that Joclyn experiences, my heart breaking right along with hers.  You better believe I went RIGHT away to purchase book 2!  A girl has to know what happens next after reading that ending!  Lucky for me books 2 and 3 are already out and book 4 is slated to release in December with book 5 coming in early 2014.

A side bonus - I learned a little Czech while reading this book.  It's a language used by some of the characters and although sometimes my tendency is to just skim over other languages used in books, this one had my complete and total curiosity as to what was being said.  So I used Google Translate to figure it out. And might I just say, you are missing out on some huge, HUGE details if you don't do this!!

A special thanks to my friend, Lacy, for staying on me to read this series!!

Favorite Quotes:
"Some people say young love is fleeting, but I think that's wrong.  I think young love is perfect.  It's pure and full of hope and desire, but it's more than that.  Young love, true love, changes you.  It's like something deep down inside you grows and becomes part of the other person.  It only takes a moment, but in that one fleeting glance of space and time, you change.  You want to be with that person, and no one else."

"Can you do magic or something, because that was wickedly fast."

"Your souls must be connected", she sighed.  I couldn't help but hear that teenage longing in her voice.  "It's like you are meant to be."

Final Rating - 4 stars
