Summary:
There are those who don’t get luck handed to them on a shiny platter, who end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, who don’t get saved.

Luck was not on Callie’s side the day of her twelfth birthday when everything was stolen from her. After it’s all over, she locks up her feelings and vows never to tell anyone what happened. Six years later her painful past consumes her life and most days it’s a struggle just to breathe.

For as long as Kayden can remember, suffering in silence was the only way to survive life. As long as he did what he was told, everything was okay. One night, after making a terrible mistake, it seems like his life might be over. Luck was on his side, though, when Callie coincidentally is in the right place at the right time and saves him.

Now he can’t stop thinking about the girl he saw at school, but never really knew. When he ends up at the same college as Callie, he does everything he can to try to get to know her. But Callie is reserved and closed off. The more he tries to be part of her life, the more he realizes Callie might need to be saved.

How is it I keep choosing books that don't yet have their sequel out?!  Can ya'll relate to how frustrating that is?  To finish an extremely good book with an incredible cliffhanger ending only to realize the next book isn't even out yet!  It's torture...

This book is incredibly dark in its content.  It was a heavy, emotional story.  My heart shattered right along with our main characters Callie and Kayden.

The story is told from both POV of Callie Kayden.  They are both troubled teens because of very different circumstances in their lives but they find their way through the dark tunnel of emotions towards the light of love through the aid of each other.  It's not until college that they connect and build a friendship, having known each other and gone to school together since third grade.  Both of them seem to be damaged beyond saving...and by the end of the book they still have a lot of issues to work through but the hurdles they overcome in this part of the story are huge.  They learn to trust one another, to be open about some of their darkest secrets and by doing these things take one step closer to the freedom they both seek from the horror that has become their existence and threatens to choke the life out of them.

This book deals with topics such as rape, physical abuse, alcoholism, cutting, bulimia and other very mature situations and content.

Jessica Sorensen was a new author to me, but she had a way of writing that just engulfed me into this story.  I felt what they felt and shared the emotions of the characters.

Favorite Quotes:

"...sometimes bad things happen on purpose by the hands of bad people."

"You're like a knight in shining armor."

"In the existence of our lives, there is a single coincidence that brings us together and for a moment, our hearts beat as one."

"Even if they were broken, I still loved them."

"There is something about someone trusting you enough with their secrets that it makes it easier to trust them."

"I'm not in love with Kayden.  I barely know him and love requires a lot of time, a lot of trust, and a lot of other things I don't understand."

"No one has ever needed me before because I've never let anyone that far in."

"That night you saved me, you changed something in me - you made me want to live."

"The way I feel is irreversible; overtaken, wanted, needed, connected.  I'll never be able to let it go."

I don't know about you, but I can't wait to see what leaps Callie and Kayden make in the next part of their story, The Redemption of Callie and Kayden.

Final Rating - 4.5 stars
