Q. Have you ever read a book that you thought you would hate? Did you end up hating it? Did you end up loving it? Or would you never do that?
I participated in a book club a couple of years ago and the downside (to me) about a book club is having to give up time you would normally choose a book that is in your preferred genre to read something that somebody else picks out which may not be anything you would normally choose. That could be disastrous to the desire to read and there were a couple I DNF. There were ones I felt strongly I wouldn't enjoy and didn't. But the one that sticks out the most to me during that time was The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. I was not in any way stoked to read it and the first 150 pages made me more clear on why I knew I wouldn't like it. Surprisingly it did get better and was pretty interesting. However, after we met to discuss the book and I heard the ending (cause I wasn't finished with it yet myself) I then had zero desire to read the last 50 pages. So I didn't. And I gave the book to a local library. And I don't miss it. And I'll never read the others.
What about you? How would you answer this question?

I totally agree! Those books were so hyped up and after resisting, I finally had the first one given to me. I read it but found it to be rather painful. Won't read the others and won't see the movies.
ReplyDeleteBTW, I am loving the cat photos. My cats do the same thing whenever I read.
I am happy to have found your blog - you've now got a follower in me!

I was tempted to buy a copy of this book last year because of how hyped it was but ended up getting a different book instead, haha. I'm not really into hyped books if I think the attention drawn to that particular book is too much, haha
ReplyDeleteI really didn't like the book either. i'm not part of book clubs for the same reason you mentioned, I'd much rather read something that I want to read, when I want to.

Hi!

That is the down side of a book club unless you join a genre specific one. My library has a few of those and I've considered joining but ended up joining one of my friend's clubs. I had to read The Marriage Plot. I knew I wouldn't like it and I hated it but so did the rest of the club so we were careful with the next selection.
ReplyDeleteThere's one that is really popular right now and it's getting great reviews, but I didn't like the first one at all. I am one of those stubborn people that won't continue a series if I thoroughly didn't like the first. Nice answer... My daughter tried that one and didn't make it as far as you did. ;)
