Edmund has infiltrated the underground hallways of Prague, guiding the massacre that would end the lives of the last of the great magical race. In her attempts to stop him, Wynifred has been captured and her magic restrained. Chained up in the ancient dungeons of Prague, her fate is left in the hands of her father, who has tried to kill her before.
With Ryland’s screams and Sain’s fragmented sights as her only company, Wyn must rely on something that has been hidden deep inside of her for centuries to help them break free.

Ilyan’s whole life has been building up to one purpose. Protect the Silnį»³. He knows what he must do, and he has no doubt in his ability to do so.
But when his father’s magic removes Joclyn’s mind from her body, he is left protecting the shell of the one person he loves. Desperate to find a way to break her free of her prison, he makes a choice. And that one choice changes everything.
Now, Ilyan finds himself bound to Joclyn in a way that he never knew to be possible.
They say that blood is thicker than water, but Black Water burns, and Ilyan’s heart may not be strong enough to keep it pumping through his veins and give the girl he loves back into his brother’s care.

This story is told from the POV's of Ilyan and Wyn during the time that Joclyn is trapped inside the mind of Cail, which takes place in book two, Eyes of Ember. Being able to see what happens during this time through their eyes adds another layer of depth to this already incredible story! Ethington does a fantastic job of deepening each character, their feelings, their thoughts and emotions.
We see through Wyn's eyes the torture that takes place at the hands of Edmund, her father Timothy and her brother Cail, not only the torture she endures but also that of Sain, Ryland and Talon. The reader takes on the pain and heartache that Wyn feels as she watches those around her wither away to nothing without their magical abilities to heal themselves. She herself is taken to the brink of death.
Ilyan....sigh....he is one incredible person! Not only has he devoted his life to protecting Joclyn for the last 800 years, but he selflessly does all this to protect her for someone else....his younger brother, her mate. Knowing he can't have her as his own, he has to love her from a distance and yet he still gives his whole heart to her knowing she can't return his feelings. This is heartbreaking and yet again I was brought to tears as he sacrifices again and again for her. He truly exhibits what it means to have unconditional love.
Outstanding third book in a series!! I was worried I would be left at the end in the same place book two leaves us. But as a bit more of a teaser, Ethington goes a little further into the story of what happens next after Eyes of Ember and we are left with an even bigger cliff hanger! The reader goes on an emotional roller coaster, fearing the death of several characters, the heartbreak that their friends feel over losing them and the uncertain future of Ryland, Joclyn and Ilyan. Book four, Soul of Flame is sure to be a fantastic continuation!
Favorite Quotes:
"She is bonded to my brother, Dramin. That is a sacred connection and one I would never take advantage of. I will protect her for him. I will keep her safe as my soul calls for me to do, but I will never take her from him. She is not mine. I love her more than I have any other. I love her enough that I would rather see her happy than in my possession. My time will come."
"You are a man beyond words."
I wanted to show her the beauty in the world, not just the sadness. I wanted to give her my heart openly, and I wanted her to take it.
I would wait a thousand more years to experience those sights...
