Armchair BEA Day 3: Novellas/Short Stories

Welcome to Day 3 of Armchair BEA 2014.
Today's topic I'm participating in is
Novellas/Short Stories

After looking back over the last 2 1/2 years of books I've read and reviewed I came to realize these were literally the only novellas I have read. I was shocked by that! I have a few more in my possession that I haven't yet read as well.

I like novellas because they are typically super short, less than 100 pages, and usually quick reads - which is a bonus because they still count towards my reading challenge. If done well they really wet your appetite for a series coming out (as in the case of Bitter Sweet Love) or they delve deeper into a character who doesn't take center stage (as in Shadows) or they give more insight into a mysterious character (as in No Mercy). I loved all three of these! I can think of one other that I have that I didn't get until after I finished the series and by then (though it was a freebie) I didn't really want to go back to read it.

I do have one small frustration with novellas. Sometimes it feels like it's just a ploy to get more book sales. There I said it. I'm not saying that's the case all the time or for everyone. Because clearly, as I've already stated, novellas can add a lot to a series. As a reader I really, REALLY appreciate when a novella is released and it's free. Considering the fact that I buy the majority of my books, getting a free novella in a series I really love is a nice gesture by the author and/or publisher and a great surprise!

Overall, I'm a fan! What about you? Love them or hate them?
What's your favorite novella?

  1. Haven't read those yet! I don't read a lot of novella's/short stories because they're too short to review and I have so many books I need to review... :P I should make a bit of time for those novella's though.

I really thought I had read novellas than this. So I was definitely surprised. 3 in 2 1/2 years is nothing! Thanks for stopping by!

  3. I do think novellas should be free. Well, actually, I think the idea of paying actual money for an electronic file is kind of weird, so I think all ebooks should be free, but especially novellas. A lot of published do release them for free though, thankfully.

  4. I have Shadows on my Kindle... actually got it free. Haven't read it yet, but will push it up the list. You're the 2nd blogger to recommend it.
