Welcome to my new feature, Fashionable or Not?, at Words Fueled by Love!
Second to my love of books (which is the sole purpose and use of this blog) is my love of finding clothes at a reasonable price. I often tell people that I try to avoid making a purchase for any clothes, shoes or accessories (and many other things but for the purpose of this feature we will stick with those categories) unless I can find it on sale, use a coupon or both. Basically, I hate paying full price!
I have a friend who taught me the art (and yes, it is an art) to shopping the sales racks. Ever since then, my eyes were opened. If I can't get it on sale or use a coupon then I don't buy it. If I'm shopping online and shipping isn't free or $5 or less, then I don't shop there. A girl on a budget has to have standards, yall!
For this first post in addition to introducing this new feature, I'm going to talk about 2 of my favorite ways to get coupons/discounts and a couple of my favorite inspiration sites for clothes. Though this won't be a weekly feature, you will see it hopefully once a month at least, and I will begin posting about outfits I've put together and where you can find the pieces too when possible. The downside to buying on sale - typically, there isn't a lot of stock on an item left.

Coupons!!!
There may be some of you reading that aren't familiar with these, and if so, check them out! Blogging is all about sharing - so share with me if I left something off that is one of your favorites.
~Retail Me Not - if ya'll aren't using this app, it's a must! My parents are constantly texting and calling asking me if I have a coupon for "x" store. They think I'm the wisest person ever to walk the planet for finding them coupons and discounts on clothes and such. (Even though I've told them to download this app a gazillion times but I digress...)
~Ebates.com - not only do they list coupons and discounts for various stores, but you earn CASH back on TONS of online retailers. It's a FREE site. Seriously, there are NO catches. Why on EARTH would you not want to use this site to shop online? Use the link to sign up!
Outfit Inspirations!!!
~J's Everyday Fashion - she lives in Florida and has the cutest ideas on clothes. I have copied exact outfits of hers before. Her site is definitely my #1 outfit inspiration website.
~Pinterest - Hands down the best place to get ideas has to be Pinterest. For a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g! And for the clothes junkee, it's a dangerous place.
There you have it, my first Fashionable or Not? post. Simple and Sweet. If you follow my blog for book reviews and such you know I'm not real "wordy" - I save that job for my sweet husband.

I dont really follow any sites or blogs about fashion, but I've learned a lot of handy tips from older women, specially from teachers when I was in school. My favorite tip was always check out what summer clothes are available during winter, chances are you'll find a ton of cheap basics that will help with your outfits. I've picked up everything from cute dresses to shorts for less than $5 at department stores. A lot of times stores don't put out all of their stock anyway during the season and eventually put it out on clearance, its a great place to start. This also works vice-versa. Hope this helps someone :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Esty! I appreciate your honesty. Fashion definitely isn't for everyone. But I think there's something to be said for taking an inspiration photo that might cost you hundreds of dollars to purchase (like the clothes pieced together on Polyvore) and finding similar pieces that cost $50 for the whole outfit. I'm allllll over that! :-)
ReplyDeleteOh yes - teachers have a knack for finding discounted "stuff". They have to right? I mean, most don't make much money so they have to shop smart when looking for their classroom items. I have a perfect example of something you are referring to - winter clothes are being highly discounted right now for the summer stuff coming out (I hate when they put out summer stuff when we have a full month or a little more left of winter...). I went to Academy this past week to look at getting my daughter a nice sweatshirt to be monogrammed for her school uniform. I found one on clearance for $4 - more than half off the retail cost. I also recently found her a pair of Bermuda jean shorts from last season at Old Navy on clearance for $4. My rule of thumb is to always look at the sales racks - even if I'm not "shopping for clothes". Because a super good deal can't be passed up. Thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteHere in the Netherlands we do have sales, but not coupons. For grocery shopping and some other things I am really searching for sales or discounts, but for clothes I usually just pay the full price or just don't buy anything at all. I hardly ever buy clothes, unless I really need something.
ReplyDeleteI remember last time I bought a few pair of socks from a discount rack and I was happy to have found them for such a nice price, but that was more of a coincidence.

ReplyDeleteYeah see, I'm not into clipping coupons for food. I have some friends that are big in to it but eh, it's not for me. And when I say "coupons" I really mean discounts - whether in email to use online codes or printable form to use in the store. 15% off total order, etc...
