Summary:
Michael and Claudia’s decision to move back to Crossroads was to keep their children safe, but they can’t escape who they are. Their children, Zachary and Lucia, were destined to be demon hunters—Venators. From the age they were able to hold a sword, they were trained to become the best and to ensure they would become leaders one day.

All is peaceful throughout the land until the Fallen and demons’ presences were felt in the between and on Earth. As the Venators investigate these locations, they will quickly learn how dangerous their lives are. Hearts will be broken. Teammates will lose their lives. And they will face obstacles which will test their faith.

As danger grows, the fear of fallen angels and demons regrouping has the Divine Elders on pins and needles. Now, Zachary and Lucia, along with Uncle Davin, must prepare themselves—mentally and physically—to live on Earth to investigate where the focal point of evil resides before it’s too late.
MY REVIEW:
I purchased this short novella after seeing book 1, The Chosen Knight, in the series available for review on Netgalley. Intrigued enough by the synopsis of book one, I decided to read this novella while I waited to see if I would be approved (which as an update I was).

For me, the point of any prequel book that has the "highly recommend reading this before beginning book one" stamp is that it draws me in just enough to want to read more. It's an appetite wetter for what's to come in the series. If it's well written, then it's well worth the $.99. Since this novella had nearly a 4.5 star rating on Goodreads and 65 reviews, I felt like the chances of my enjoying it were high.

This novella gives the back story of a team of Nephilim and their demon hunting training to prepare them for missions on earth. Two of them are brother and sister - which is extremely rare in the angel realm as angels are not allowed to get married and have kids. But for whatever reason, the archangels didn't prevent their parents. The siblings plus their uncle have been given the mission to go to Hawaii to investigate fallen angels and demon activity and report back what they find. They are to live as humans in all ways - which means high school. However this novella is leading up to their leaving; additional training and a trip to NYC to check on demon activity. The siblings have never lived among humans and so they have to learn the language, mannerisms and as much as they can about human teenagers so that they blend in.

Unfortunately I didn't find much of this short story to pull me in a whole lot. Therefore, I wouldn't say it's needed before beginning book one of the series.

Top Favorite Quotes:
"Every time you leave us, it feels like a dagger inside my heart, waiting to be taken out. That dagger stays until you return home, safe and sound."

Mother had once told me we are all born with a purpose. Sometimes we don't see it, but it would unfold at the right time. Some destinies blow up like fireworks, and some are so subtle, you never know they are there.
